Ladies and Gentlemen as you may be aware The SMP Group is a long established print production company with a history stretching back to the latter part of the 19th century. After some consultation with our resident historian (and SMP partner) Jonathan Oppenheimer here is the first instalment of the SMP history. More to follow; The company’s history appears to have begun in, yes, 1888, when two related businesses were established in West Norwood: Meisenbach & Co and Carl Henschel Ltd. Meisenbach is thought to have introduced 4-colour photolithography to Britain, while Carl Henschel was an engraving business, in effect a forerunner of repro houses. Later this firm moved into Central London and became an early ad agency. Carl Henschel himself is thought to have been a friend of Jerome K Jerome and to have been one of the three men in a boat! The firm that started as Meisenbach went through a number of transformations and name changes and by the early 1920s was called ‘The Compleat Press’ (sic). It was already producing posters, including the iconic early road safety poster, The Widow in Black, while another mainstay was sheet music, very popular at a time when many homes had a piano while few if any had a gramophone. At this time the company was taken over by a World War 1 veteran, Captain Blackburn. He took on a secretary, Nellie Wallis, who was said to have come to London to work for an aunt who was a Brixton Hill madam. In due course Nellie gave birth to the Captain’s son; they called the boy Michael and changed the company’s name to St Michael’s Press Ltd in 1928. Bill Williams, who joined the firm in about `1920 and ended up as joint MD in the 1960’s, told me that Michael was a spoiled brat who on one occasion took his father’s regimental sword off his office wall and used it to pierce every ink tin in the place!

The men in white coats are back in SMP again! No not those men...men with screwdrivers. We have some serious new firepower being installed right now. The Agfa Titan has some arse kicking credentials. Prints 1200dpi on a 3m x 2m sheet and 230sq m of those sheets per hour. Impressive. The word on the street is that more investment is planned. All in place for a great new year.
